My expertise is highly respected especially for British instruments and bows, and I am also happy to certify instruments. Over the years colleagues from around the world have relied on me for advice in the identification and certification of instruments. Where it is appropriate I am able to certify instruments of other nationalities or provide supporting letters to reinforce unfamiliar or dated opinions. As a matter of policy it is essential that I am able to research each instrument in person before coming to an opinion. However, I am happy to receive photographs and discuss possibilities of certification before arranging a visit. Please contact me for further information.
I’m always pleased to provide a verbal opinion to members of the public on an instrument or a bow whether you are thinking of selling a family heirloom or think you have a Stradivari in the attic. An initial opinion by email will establish whether the instrument requires specialist attention or not. A verbal opinion or initial non-binding email assessment is free of charge, but fees apply for any formal opinion.
I offer verbal opinions on a principle of ‘fair-use’. I’m very happy to give the occasional opinion, but I draw the line at repeated use of my time for free and all assistance if given completely at my discretion. A verbal opinion is non-binding. I cannot entertain requests where the photographs are of an impossibly poor standard.
