Benjamin Hebbert Violins

Barak Norman & Daniel Parker, London, c.1710

A collaboration between Barak Norman and Daniel Parker, London circa 1710-20 (LOB 403mm)

I don’t have a video for this instrument yet. Until I make one, here is a short film that I commissioned in 2016 as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Centenary to help support Newark School of Violin Making, co-founded by him in 1972. If you would like to extend your support of the school, please like and share this video as the exposure is incredibly important in raising awareness of this precious institution.

Description

A collaboration between Barak Norman and Daniel Parker, London circa 1710-20 (LOB 403mm)

A very fine and rare viola made amongst the makers of St Paul’s Churchyard. The outline  and soundholes are typical of Barak Norman who was active at the sign of the bass viol in St Paul’s Churchyard from 1690 to 1724, but the instrument manifestly shows the hand of the famed Daniel Parker for it’s highly observed Italianate arching and edgework. Collaborations between these two makers are relatively common. From the little we know of Daniel Parker he worked as a journeyman at times with a number of shops, and at other times providing his work for resale. The small markings on the back, where we would expect to see locating pins in Cremonese work appear also in the work of Norman’s apprentice, Nathaniel Cross.

Certificate: Benjamin Hebbert

Condition notes: The instrument is overall in very good condition. The later scroll by a member of the Gagliano family.
