A fine silver-mounted violin bow by Eugène Nicolas Sartory, Paris, 1890-1900 period.

I don’t have a video for this instrument yet. Until I make one, here is a short film that I commissioned in 2016 as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Centenary to help support Newark School of Violin Making, co-founded by him in 1972. If you would like to extend your support of the school, please like and share this video as the exposure is incredibly important in raising awareness of this precious institution.

Description

A fine silver-mounted violin bow by Eugène Nicolas Sartory, Paris, 1890-1900 period.
Stamped: E. SARTORY A PARIS.

Eugène Nicolas Sartory’s reputation as a legend of 20th century bowmaking gets ever stronger. In truth, his success is as a versatile bow with qualities that work across the various demands of modern professional playing, so that although other bows may have individual strengths there are few that operate consistently well within a varied classical repertoire.

Octagonal sticks are more common in Sartory’s later period after 1930, and this is a relatively unusual example dating from his earliest years after 1890, reflects more of his training with Alfred Lamy than most bows that he made. The result is bow on the lighter side, and potentially more interesting in terms of longtiudinal stiffness, ultimately one of the most compelling Sartory bows for playability according to my own taste at least.

Certificate: On request

Condition notes: The bow is in good condition, the thumb-projection of the frog has been reshaped.
