The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicans.
Macmillian, London, second printing of the third edition (1929) in five volumes.

I don’t have a video for this instrument yet. Until I make one, here is a short film that I commissioned in 2016 as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Centenary to help support Newark School of Violin Making, co-founded by him in 1972. If you would like to extend your support of the school, please like and share this video as the exposure is incredibly important in raising awareness of this precious institution.

Description

The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
Macmillian, London, second printing of the third edition (1929) in five volumes.

Early editions of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians are helpful reference sources with the advantage of being only five volumes so that it sits well on the shelf. There are obvious improvements in scholarship but for most things it is sound and reliable if dated. In the 1960s the fifth edition comprised nine volumes and later editions ballooned after that. Hence these early editions remain an attractive and manageable general resource because they fit well on the bookshelf.
