Benjamin Hebbert Violins

Violin Making as it Was and Is

Edward Heron-Allen, Violin Making as it Was and Is.

I don’t have a video for this instrument yet. Until I make one, here is a short film that I commissioned in 2016 as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Centenary to help support Newark School of Violin Making, co-founded by him in 1972. If you would like to extend your support of the school, please like and share this video as the exposure is incredibly important in raising awareness of this precious institution.

Description

Edward Heron-Allen, Violin Making as it Was and Is.
Ward & Co. First Edition, 1884.

Edward Heron-Allen was a polymath and energetic writer in Victorian London. Having turned his attention to violin making, and receiving instruction in the workshop of George Chanot, Violin Making as it Was and Is provides as much an exposé of the business of violin making, as providing instructional guidance for makers. Whilst it is utterly outdated, and worth reading with a sizeable pinch-of-salt, it remains an important window into practices of the nineteenth-century violin trade. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the violin.
