Flemish Virginals

The violin never existed in isolation, and it’s important for me to understand the fundamental histories of other instruments that co-exist in the same time and space as the violin’s development. Here is a summary of the Flemish harpsichords, virginals and muselaars in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Collection written to provide a broader cultural context. It is one of several articles drafted for the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History.
