Benjamin Hebbert Violins

Jack Lott, London, c.1840

A superb English violin by Jack Lott, London, circa 1840

I don’t have a video for this instrument yet. Until I make one, here is a short film that I commissioned in 2016 as part of the Yehudi Menuhin Centenary to help support Newark School of Violin Making, co-founded by him in 1972. If you would like to extend your support of the school, please like and share this video as the exposure is incredibly important in raising awareness of this precious institution.

Description

A superb English violin by Jack Lott, London, circa 1840

Jack Lott as he is known (otherwise John Frededick (II) Lott) is the ultimate copyist of the nineteenth century, and he is especially praised for his copies after Guarneri del Gesu. This violin reflects Guarneri’s stule from about 1740, and is a spectacular example of his work, perhaps the only significant give-away being the American sugar maple that he chose for the back. Superficially this gives a spectacular Cremonese look, but to the expert eye the erratic flame is easy to characterise.

Certificate: Benjamin Hebbert

Condition notes: The violin is in a good state of preservation.
